Anna Maria Russell, the Duchess of Bedford (1783–1857), a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria, is considered to be the inventor of afternoon tea.

At that time, the lunch meal was apparently increasingly poor.

Therefore, the noble lady suffered from a feeling of weakness between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

After initially secret meals, other ladies-in-waiting later invited themselves to the Duchess’s chambers for an additional afternoon meal.

This snack was such a success that her guests eventually adopted it.

Afternoon tea was born.
